Shelf-Life Extension - Our Solution

UP UNTIL now, no-one has been able to achieve the right balance of O2 and CO2 permeability and the moisture vapour humidity with complete success. Sira-FlexTM ResolveTM has provided a solution. The best technology previously was plastic (polypropylene) film with small or large holes. These films are often laser-perforated to make the holes very small. These small holes allow moisture vapour, O2 and CO2 to permeate the package walls.

This is a really clumsy way to achieve the required permeability. A hole, even a laser-made one, is enormous in comparison with a molecule of O2, CO2 or moisture vapour. The holes don’t really balance the permeability, the O2, CO2 and moisture vapour will all permeate at virtually the same rate through the hole. More importantly (and this is critical) permeability will not really change with temperature. 

If the pack temperature increases, the respiration rate of the vegetables increases and the amount of moisture vapour released increases. The opposite happens when the temperature decreases. 

To ensure the optimum atmosphere inside the pack, the permeability of the pack would also increase and decrease with temperature to match the changing respiration and transpiration rate of the food. Holes do not do this. The permeability does not change with temperature. This is their limitation.

Sira-FlexTM ResolveTM does not need holes. It is a new, unique film which has been developed to have the optimum balance between humidity control and O2 and CO2 permeability. It does not rely on holes, the permeability is controlled by the property of the film itself. 

Due to the unique structure of the film material, the permeability to humidity, O2 and CO2 is different in each case. This has allowed us to balance the permeability of each component to achieve the optimum result. 

Additionally and critically, the permeability is temperature dependant so that the optimum atmosphere is maintained inside the pack even if the storage temperature is variable.

The results are remarkable. There is no condensation on the inside of the film and the product does not dry out. The package atmosphere is maintained with the optimum balance of atmospheric gases to prevent degradation. 

Shelf life extension of several days and more is achieved for many products. The film is suitable for all types of vegetables including salads as well as most fresh fruit.

The film is not plastic. It is a natural bio-polymer made from plants. It is sustainable and fully compostable.
