Sirane Mexico to open in the heart of berry-growing region

Sirane Mexico is on an innovation park in Guadalajara

SIRANE will open a new factory in the heart of the Mexican berry-growing region in January 2016, as demand from the region for innovative products continues to gather pace.

Sirane Mexico will be based in Guadalajara, close to the major berry growing regions and the headquarters of many major growers, and will focus initially on absorbent fruit pads.

Simon Balderson, Sirane MD, said: “Mexico is the perfect place for Sirane to begin manufacturing. Certainly in soft-fruit terms, it is one of the world’s major producers, but geographically it is also quite a distance from many of its major export markets.

“This means shelf-life matters to the Mexican growers, and they understand its importance. They are very experienced and highly educated in this area, so it fits perfectly for us. The Mexican fruit export market has grown significantly in recent years following investment.

“Sirane’s invested a lot of time in recent years on shelf-life extension for fruit and vegetables, and we’ve now got some very effective products. Everything fits together perfectly.

“I’ve visited the region myself, and found the growers to be very receptive to new technology, and keen to get involved. They are seriously excited by what we’re offering.

“By opening manufacturing in Mexico, Sirane will be able to offer better service and better technology to the region, whilst also gaining from their knowledge and expertise. The transport links will also connect us with major markets in Central and North America.”

Mexico’s soft-fruit industry is one of the largest in the world. Its temperature, height above sea-level and rainfall make growing conditions absolutely ideal. Vast quantities of fruit including strawberries, blackberries, raspberries and blueberries are exported to Europe, North America and even the Far East – making packaging vitally important.

Other regions of North and Central America are also significant exporters of fruit, and so Sirane Mexico will be in a good location to supply demand across the entire region.

Sirane offers a range of absorbent pads for fruit, including standard absorbency, absorbent ‘cushioned ‘ bubble pads, and our new Dri-Fresh ABV pads, which contain a blend of natural bio-flavonoids and organic acids which naturally enhance fruit’s own protective defences.

All of these products will be manufactured at the new 1,500 sq m unit in Guadalajara, in an innovation park where there is scope to expand the site as the Mexican business grows.

Simon Balderson added: “Sirane Mexico will provide jobs in the region for engineers, scientists and in manufacturing. In effect will be opening a fruit-based R&D department in the region alongside the manufacturing. We have had great help from Pro Mexico in the UK, as well as the Mexican government and the local officials in the Jalisco region.

“The location in Guadalajara is perfect, close to the major growing regions and so close to customers, and on a new innovation park with easy access to the Pan-American Highway – meaning it is well connected by road to much of North and Central America.

“Sirane Mexico is a significant step for Sirane. We’ve been encouraged every step of the way by people within the Mexican fruit industry and by government officials, and we’re now looking forward to the day the factory opens for business and begins production.”

Sirane is a highly innovative packaging product development-to-manufacture company based in the United Kingdom. It has four divisions: food packaging; medical and healthcare; industrial and horticultural, and a number of agents and distributors across the world. Sirane Mexico is the company’s third manufacturing facility, with the main manufacturing centre remaining in Telford, Shropshire, UK. The third factory is in Antalya, Turkey.

Sirane Mexico will manufacture products solely for the local markets in Central/North America. Our manufacturing in Telford will be unaffected, and is currently being expanded to provide further increased capacity, following a very successful 2015. With the exception of a small amount of existing absorbent fruit pad business currently supplied into Mexico from the UK, we will not be moving any manufacturing out of the UK.

Sirane will be exhibiting at Fruit Logistica in Berlin from February 3-5, 2016. Our stand is B-09, Hall 8.2. Adam Green, president of Sirane North America, will be on the stand. Fruit Logistica, held every year in the German capital, is one of the world’s largest fruit trade shows – last year saw 2,700 exhibitors and 65,000 trade visitors from 135 countries.

Discovery day in the world of asparagus

IT’S all things asparagus for Sirane later this month as we head to an agronomy day at a farm in Worcestershire held by the Asparagus Growers’ Association (AGA).

The AGA is holding a day-long event at Woodhouse Farm in Kidderminster on Thursday, June 25, offering the chance to discover more about a complicated vegetable.

Gillian Carter, sales executive for fresh produce, said: “We have a huge range of fresh produce packaging capabilities, and the agronomy day is a great opportunity to find out more about this fascinating plant, and how our packaging solutions could help.

“With asparagus commanding a high price during a short growing season in the UK, and traded in large quantities globally, there is scope for our products to make a difference.”

Presentations will include ‘Managing major asparagus diseases and decline’ and ‘World asparagus market overview’ by Dr Peter Falloon, of Aspara Pacific Ltd, New Zealand.

There will also be three workshops: a tour of the asparagus fields; understanding soil structures & erosion control; and machinery demonstrations on maximising yields.

In addition, the day offers a chance for exhibitors to show off their products, and Sirane will have a small stand where we will show some products including asparagus pads, asparagus pouches, steam-cooking bags, and shelf-life extending bags and films.

Sirane is a highly innovative packaging product development-to-manufacture company based in Telford, Shropshire. Specialisms include absorbency and cooking bags.

Fruit pads are the answer to many packaging problems

Absorbent fruit pads from Sirane include these pads with integrated ethylene absorbency

MODIFIED atmosphere packaging (MAP) can extend the shelf-life of fresh fruit – but can also cause problems with condensation – and Sirane’s absorbent fruit pads could be the answer.

MAP packaging which has been permeated with small holes can help keep fruit fresh, but this success can be negated by a downside – an excess of condensation within the pack which could contribute to problems such as increased levels of mould growth.

Gillian Carter, who heads up our fresh produce sales, said: “Whether you’re looking for absorbent fruit pads, pads with integrated ethylene absorption or anti-fungal properties, or cushioned pads for soft-fruit, Sirane has an extensive range to suit all needs.

“So come and talk to us, tell us the problems you’re experiencing, and we’ll tell you what we can do to help – it might well be a packaging solution we’ve already found, and if not we’re a development company, so would be happy to work with you to solve the issue.

“There’s no point solving one packaging problem, such as creating a pack which allows for the ideal respiration rate, if it simply creates another problem with increased mould.

“We have a range of fruit pads, available in different sizes, different colours, and varying levels of absorbencies, so whatever fruit you are packaging, we have a solution.”

Sirane’s new Dri-fresh Soft-Hold pad - which combines the cushioning and protective properties of bubble films with effective absorbency, high permeability and excellent product presentation – is one such pad which could solve condensation problems.

“Soft fruit is often transported huge distances,” said Gillian Carter, “and so protecting the fruit in the most effective way possible is vital. The more fruit that arrives at its destination in perfect condition, the better it is for everyone involved in the supply chain.

“Sirane can offer the ultimate protection, cushioned protection alongside absorbency – we can even integrate ethylene absorbency and anti-fungal options if required.

“Soft-Hold has been developed with distributors and retailers in mind, with an eye on the needs of the companies involved. Our customers have been telling us they want pads that offer more protection for the packaged fruit that extend shelf-life.

“Soft-hold ticks all the boxes, and the feedback so far has been incredibly positive. It combines everything into one great product, with the cushioned layer offering a final level of protection that no other product on the market has managed.”

Other products in the Sirane fresh produce packaging range include standard Dri-Fresh Fresh-Hold pads, offering absorbency, ethylene absorbency and anti-fungal options if required, and labels which can be hidden in a pack and absorb unwanted ethylene.

Anti-fungal treatment been shown to extend the shelf life of soft fruit beyond that available with current technologies, and the integration of pad and anti-fungal treatment can significantly reduce packaging costs for growers and distributors.

Sirane is a highly innovative packaging product development-to-manufacture company based in Telford, Shropshire. It has four divisions: food packaging; medical and healthcare; industrial and horticultural. Specialisms include absorbency and cooking bags.

Simon Balderson, Sirane MD, said: “We are the absorbency experts, so if you’re having issues with condensation in your fruit packaging, or any other issue where absorbency could be the answer, then give Sirane a call – we’re here to help solve your packaging problems.”

Shelf-life the hot-topic at Fruit Logistica 2015

Gillian Carter, Adam Green & Veronique Richard at Fruit Logistica.

THE industry’s need to increase the shelf-life of fresh fruit and vegetables and reduce wastage meant Sirane had a very busy few days at Fruit Logistica 2015 in Berlin last week.

Fruit Logistica – Europe’s biggest and most popular fresh produce show – was at Messe Berlin in the German capital from February 4-6, and Sirane was very busy.

Sirane offers a range of fresh produce packaging solutions which can help protect produce during transportation and extend shelf-life – all of which were exhibited.

Gillian Carter, who heads up our fresh produce sales, said: “Shelf-life and protection of fruit and vegetables is vital to the industry, and even a few days can make such a difference. If more produce can reach the shelves in a saleable condition, and it lasts longer on the shelf when it gets there, then far less is wasted in the supply chain, and profitability increases.

“Fruit Logistica saw a constant stream of potential customers interested in the many solutions we are able to offer, and a number expressed an interest in beginning trials. We also had a number of distributors looking to take our products into particular markets.

“From absorbent cushioned pads for soft fruit through to shelf-life extending bags and films, we have a range of solutions that can make a big difference in the supply chain.”

One product that we expected to generate plenty of interest, and it did, is Sirane’s new Dri-fresh Soft-Hold pad which combines the cushioning and protective properties of bubble films with effective absorbency, high permeability and excellent product presentation.

“Soft fruit is often transported huge distances globally,” said Gillian Carter, “and so protecting the fruit is vital. The more fruit that arrives at its destination in perfect condition, the better it is for everyone involved in the supply chain, as far less fruit gets wasted.

“Sirane can offer the ultimate protection, cushioned protection alongside absorbency – we can even integrate ethylene absorbency and anti-fungal options if required. A number of visitors to the stand loved the product, and could see the difference it could make.

“Soft-Hold has been developed with distributors and retailers in mind, with an eye on the needs of the companies involved. Our customers have been telling us they want pads that offer more protection for the packaged fruit that extend shelf-life.”

Other products in the Sirane fresh produce packaging range include standard Dri-Fresh Fresh-Hold pads, offering absorbency, ethylene absorbency and anti-fungal options if required, and labels which can be hidden in a pack and absorb unwanted ethylene.

We also have our Sira-Flex Resolve range. Sira-Flex Resolve is a range of films, bags and pallet liners for extending the shelf-life of fruit and vegetables. It is 100% sustainable, 100% compostable, and can significantly extend the shelf-life of many products.

Simon Balderson, Sirane MD, said: “Sira-Flex Resolve is a breathable film, made from a natural biopolymer. If you are looking for ways to increase the shelf-life of your produce, either in the supply chain or on the shelf, then this is a film that you should be taking a look at.

“Sira-Flex Resolve always generates a lot of interest, because it is such an incredible material, and Fruit Logistica was no different. Again, we had a number of companies looking to trial the product in their own supply chain, which we actively encourage.”
